Catherine Guthrie (maiden name: Long) was born around 1819 in Maryland. She married Samuel Guthrie around 1844, and they had at least three children: Amos, born around 1844; Sarah, born around 1848; and Mary, born around 1851. They lived in Rumley, Ohio, and her husband worked as a stone mason. In 1850, they owned $400 of real estate; a decade later, they had $800 of real estate and $200 of personal property. Her husband probably died sometime in the 1880s. She applied for a federal pension in January 1891 and eventually secured one. By 1900, she was living with her daughter Mary in Rumley. She died on July 1, 1903.
