Cornelius M. McLaurin was born around 1842, probably in North Carolina, to Hugh and Eliza McLaurin. His father was a clergyman who owned $600 of real estate in 1850. The family was living in Moore County, North Carolina, in 1850, but they probably moved to Georgia soon afterward. His father died in Georgia on September 30, 1852. By 1860, McLaurin was working as a clerk. He enlisted in the Confederate army on April 20, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company D of the 2nd Georgia Infantry Battalion later that day. He died of disease in Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on December 28, 1862.
