George W. Myers was born around 1832 in Ohio to Henry Myers and Elizabeth Rodgers. His father was a farmer who owned $1,000 of real estate in 1850. Myers grew up and attended school in York, Ohio. He married Rhena Anne Farwell on December 31, 1860, and they had at least three children: Estella, born in the early 1860s; Nettie, born around 1866; and May, born around 1871.
He enlisted in the Union army on October 27, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company A of the 68th Ohio Infantry later that day. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fort Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, the siege of Vicksburg, the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He was promoted to sergeant on July 1, 1861, but he was reduced to the ranks on March 9, 1864. He mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky, on July 10, 1865.
He returned to York after the war and earned a living as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $6,000 of real estate and $600 of personal property. He remained in York for the rest of his life, and he died there on February 17, 1911.
