Happy F. Stetson (maiden name: Smith) was born around 1822 in Phillips, Maine, to Reuben Smith and Mary Whitney. She married Jeremiah Stetson in Phillips, Maine, on February 22, 1843, and they had at least four children: Edwin, born around 1844; Melvina, born around 1846; Marshall, born around 1856; and Ruth, born around 1859. They settled in Hanson, Massachusetts, and her husband worked as a shoemaker there. In 1850, they owned $50 of real estate, and a decade later, they owned $500 of real estate and $32 of personal property. Her husband died around 1869, and after his death, Happy earned a living as a dress maker. By 1900, she was living in her son Marshall’s household in Hanson. She died of “consumption and heart disease” in Hanson on February 7, 1901.
