Samuel Ohmart was born around 1825 in Ohio to Jacob and Elizabeth Ohmart. By 1850, he was working as a brickmaker in Greenville, Ohio, and he owned $200 of real estate. He married Sarah Guntrum there on November 5, 1850, and they had five children: Allen, born on August 11, 1851; John, born on October 24, 1854; Amie, born on February 7, 1857; Mary, born on September 31, 1860; and Samuel, born on June 21, 1862. They lived in Greenville, and by 1860, they owned $60 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on October 26, 1861, and he mustered in as a corporal in Company D of the 69th Ohio Infantry on January 20, 1862. He died of chronic diarrhea in Nashville, Tennessee, on December 28, 1862.
