Eliza S. Austin (maiden name: Hayden) was born around 1809 in New Jersey to Benjamin and Mary Hayden. Her father was a cooper who owned $4,000 of real estate by 1850. She married Russell Austin in Trenton, New Jersey, on July 15, 1841, and their son John was born around 1842. In 1850, she was living in her father’s household in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1860, her husband was living in the Kansas Territory, and she was living with their son in Trenton. He returned to New Jersey sometime in the 1860s, and by 1870, they were living together in Camden, New Jersey. The 1870 census described her husband as “infirm” and reported that she owned $5,000 of real estate and $4,000 of personal property. She died in Camden in October 1874.
