William Manwaring was born around 1837 in New Jersey to Adam and Susan Manwaring. His father was a farmer who owned $6,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property by 1860. Manwaring moved to Avon, Michigan, sometime before 1850 and earned a living as a farmer. He married Emily A. Steel on December 14, 1858, and their son William was born around 1863. He enlisted in the Union army on August 11, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 22nd Michigan Infantry three days later. He was captured in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863, and imprisoned in Andersonville, Georgia. He died there on August 1, 1864.
