Heber Painter
Heber Painter was born on November 4, 1841, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, to Jacob Painter. His father was a hatter who owned $5,500 of real estate by 1850. His mother died sometime before 1850, and his father died around 1855. By 1860, he was living in Danville, Pennsylvania, and working as a printer for the Danville Democrat newspaper.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on October 8, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 58th Pennsylvania Infantry later that day. The regiment spent the war stationed in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, and it took part in the Battle of Cold Harbor. He was promoted to sergeant on November 26, 1864, and then to 1st lieutenant on March 1, 1865. He mustered out on January 21, 1866.
 
Painter settled in Upper Augusta, Pennsylvania, after the war, and he may have married a woman named Emily in the late 1860s. By 1870, he owned $800 of real estate. He worked in the printing office of the Sunbury Gazette. H fell ill in December 1889, and he died of jaundice in Sunbury on January 11, 1890.
