George Washington Howard was born on June 29, 1846, in South Carolina, to William and Nancy Howard. His father was a farmer who owned $600 of real estate in 1850. He grew up and attended school in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He enlisted in the Confederate army and mustered in as a private in Walter’s Company, South Carolina Light Artillery. He surrendered on April 28, 1865, as part of Joseph E. Johnston’s Army of Tennessee.
Howard returned to Edgefield after the war and worked as a farm laborer. He married Martha Gayley, and they had at least eight children: James, born around 1867; Rufus, born around 1870; Elective, born around 1871; Ida, born around 1873; Katie, born around 1877; John, born around 1880; William, born around 1884; and Harvey, born around 1886. They lived in Meridian Church, Tennessee, until the late 1800s, when they moved to Justice, Texas. By 1910, they were living in Avoca, Oklahoma, and by 1920, they were living in College Park, Georgia. He died of pneumonia in College Park on June 22, 1925.
