Edwin B. Paine
Edwin B. Paine was born around 1843 in Connecticut. By the early 1860s, he was working as a farmer. He enlisted in the Union army on September 27, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company E of the 4th New York Cavalry later that day. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. Confederate forces captured him in Rappahannock County, Virginia, on June 19, 1863, and he was paroled four days later. He was eventually exchanged, and he rejoined his regiment. He was promoted to corporal and then to commissary sergeant. He was transferred to Company E of the 9th New York Cavalry in November or December 1864, and he mustered out on July 17, 1865. He died sometime after leaving the army.
