John C. Tuttle was born sometime in the 1810s in Maine. He married a woman named Betsey, and they had at least five children: James, born around 1842; Angelina, born around 1843; John, born around 1846; William, born around 1849; and Annilins, born around 1852. The family lived in Rockland, Maine, and Tuttle worked as a laborer. They moved to Freeman, Maine, in the 1850s. He enlisted in the Union army on August 14, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company C of the 16th Maine Infantry later that day. Union officials detailed him to the ambulance corps later that year. He fell ill in October 1863, and he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps sometime before February 1864. He mustered out on June 15, 1864. He probably returned to Maine after leaving the army. He applied for a federal pension in February 1871 and eventually secured one. He died sometime after 1871.
