Catherine Calhoun (maiden name: Burns) was born around 1826 in Ireland. She eventually immigrated to America and settled in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She married James Calhoun there on October 10 or 11, 1848, and they had two children: Jane Eliza, born on October 30, 1854; and Mary Catherine, born on December 20, 1860. They lived in Allegheny, and her husband worked as a laborer and policeman. By 1860, they owned $1,600 of real estate. James enlisted in the Union army in April 1861, and he died in the Battle of Fair Oaks on May 31, 1862. She applied for a widow’s pension in May 1863, and she secured an $8 monthly pension the following year. She died sometime after 1866.
