Ira A. Simmons
Ira A. Simmons was born on June 16, 1841, in Annsville, New York, to Orin and Betsey Simmons. His father was a farmer who owned $2,000 of real estate and $1,700 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Annsville, and by 1860, he was working as a farm laborer.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 29, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 146th New York Infantry on October 10. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 9½ inches tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He died near Petersburg on June 18, 1864.
