John McCrone was born around 1851 in Ireland to Anthony and Mary McCrone. His father was a stone cutter who owned $800 of real estate and $100 of personal property by 1860. The family immigrated to America in the early 1850s and settled in Virginia. They moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in the late 1850s and then to Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1860s. By 1870, McCrone was working as a stone cutter. He married Cordelia Brown in the 1870s. They lived in Louisville, and McCrone continued working as a stone cutter. They eventually moved to Topeka, Kansas. His mental health deteriorated in the late 1890s, and he died by suicide in April 1898.
