Samuel Goodman
Samuel Goodman was born on August 17, 1834, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to Henry and Maria Goodman. His parents baptized him in S. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Germantown on September 10. His father was a farmer who owned $15,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and by 1860, he was working as a farmer.

On September 9, 1861, he received a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the 147th Pennsylvania Infantry. A month later, on October 15, 1861, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant in the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Atlanta campaign, the March to the Sea, and the Carolinas campaign. He was promoted to colonel on March 16, 1865.

Goodman returned to Philadelphia after the war, and he married Louise Tilge there on October 15, 1867. He worked as a tailor, and by 1870, he owned $5,000 of personal property. He applied for a passport in 1871, and his records describe him as 5 feet, 9½ inches tall, with brown hair and dark brown eyes.

Goodman worked in the importing business, and he co-founded the firm Harrington and Goodman. He apparently divided his time between Philadelphia and West Palm Beach, Florida. He applied for a federal pension in June 1913 and eventually secured one. He died in West Palm Beach on March 23, 1914.
