William Amasa Small
William Amasa Small was born on September 2, 1838, in Topsfield, Massachusetts, to Isaiah and Betsey Small. His father was a shoemaker who owned $3,000 of real estate and $200 of personal property by 1860. Small grew up in Topsfield, and by the late 1850s, he was also working as a shoemaker. He married Celia J. Rust on January 1, 1860, and their daughter Carrie was born around 1863. Small continued to work as a shoemaker, and the family moved to Salem, Massachusetts, in the 1870s. By 1910, they were living in their daughter Carrie’s household in Salem. He died in Salem in July 1911.
