Francis W. Lytle
Francis W. Lytle was born around 1820 in Pennsylvania. He married Florida M. Roust on April 22, 1845, and they had at least four children: Ann, born around 1846; James, born around 1848; Kate, born around 1855; and Mary, born around 1859. Lytle earned a living as a physician. They lived in Tennessee before moving to Troy, Illinois, in the late 1840s. By 1850, he owned $1,000 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $2,800 of real estate and $500 of personal property.
 
He joined the Union army, mustering in as an assistant surgeon in the 51st Illinois Infantry on September 25, 1862. On April 28, 1863, he was promoted to surgeon of the 36th Illinois Infantry. In May 1864, he suffered an attack of “angina Pectoris.” He resigned on April 29, 1865.
 
Lytle settled in Lebanon, Illinois, after the war and resumed his work as a physician. By 1870, he owned $6,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property. He employed at least one white domestic servant. His wife died on July 11, 1875, and he married Charlotte Danforth on June 12, 1877. Their son Francis was born around 1879. He applied for a federal pension in February 1879 and eventually secured one. He died of “suppression of urine” in St. Louis, Missouri, on July 18, 1884.
