Charles H. McArthur was born on March 17, 1839, in Ohio to John and Rachel McArthur. His father was a farmer who owned $4,500 of real estate and $880 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Starr, Ohio, until the 1850s, when they moved to Brown, Ohio.
McArthur enlisted in the Union army on April 25, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company D of the 17th Ohio Infantry two days later. He mustered out on August 15, 1861. He married Anna Charlotte Linton on October 13, 1861, and they had at least three children: William, born around 1863; John, born around 1866; and Charlotte, born around 1873.
They lived in Center, Indiana, and McArthur worked as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $7,700 of real estate and $500 of personal property. They moved to La Canada, California, in the late 1800s. His wife died of “paralysis” on December 24, 1906. By 1910, McArthur was living with his daughter Charlotte in Burbank, California. He died in Los Angeles County, California, on January 13, 1916.
