John C. Page was born on November 7, 1824, in Ryegate, Vermont, to John Page and Dorcas Hibbard. He married Nancy Gates on September 29, 1846, and they had at least five children: George, born around 1847; Flora, born around 1854; Ida, born around 1857; Calista, born around 1860; and Eugene, born around 1862. They lived in Ryegate, Vermont, and Page worked as a carpenter. By 1850, he owned $2,000 of real estate.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 14, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 1st United States Sharpshooters on September 20. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness on May 5, 1864, but he eventually recovered and rejoined the regiment. Army officials transferred him to the 2nd United States Sharpshooters on December 23, 1864, and then to the 4th Vermont Infantry on February 25, 1865. He mustered out on June 19, 1865.
Page settled in Westmore, Vermont, after the war, and he earned a living as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate and $1,200 of personal property. He employed at least two white domestic servants. His wife died on February 6, 1880. He married Lois Powell on March 22, 1883. By 1890, he was living in Barton, Vermont. He died of “chronic cystitis and nephritis” in Barton on October 25, 1899.
