Selden Hollis Loring was born on November 25, 1843, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, to Hollis and Laura Loring. His father was a merchant who owned $4,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Marlborough.
He enlisted in the Union army on November 6, 1861, and he mustered in as a sergeant major in the 30th Massachusetts Infantry on January 3, 1862. The regiment took part in the siege of Port Hudson. He was promoted to 2nd lieutenant on June 9, 1862, and he was discharged for disability on August 31, 1864.
He returned to Marlborough after leaving the army, and he married Sarah H. Albee there on October 19, 1864. The couple apparently had no children. By 1880, they were living with his mother in Boston, Massachusetts, and that year’s federal census stated that he had “no business.” He died of Bright’s disease in Boston on February 27, 1892.
