John Pepper was born around 1795 in Virginia. He eventually moved to Stokes County, North Carolina, and got married. He had at least four children Dewitt, born around 1828; Rufus, born around 1832; Nathaniel, born around 1837; and John, born on October 19, 1837. His wife probably died sometime before 1850.
He worked as a physician, and by 1850, he owned $4,500 of real estate. A decade later, he owned $12,000 of real estate and $10,000 of personal property. The Civil War apparently devastated his finances, and by 1870, he only owned $1,000 of real estate. By 1880, he was living with his son John in Danbury, North Carolina. He suffered an attack of “paralysis” on February 5, 1881, and he reportedly “lingered in a helpless state” for the next several months. He died in Danbury on July 6, 1881.
