Clinton Milton Andrews
Clinton Milton Andrews was born around 1829 in North Carolina to John and Sarah Andrews. His father was a carpenter. He grew up and attended school in Guilford County, North Carolina, before enrolling at the University of North Carolina. He graduated in 1851 and delivered a speech on “Washington’s Monument—the Key-Stone of the Arch of the Union.”

He married Ella M. Butz, and their son Clarence was born on July 29, 1856. They lived in Harnett County, North Carolina, and Andrews worked as a schoolteacher at the Asheboro Male Academy. Around July 1860, he moved to Iredell County, North Carolina, to join his brother John at the Statesville Military Academy.

The brothers closed the academy in early 1861 to join the Confederate army. He received a commission as a captain in Company B of the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry on June 21, 1861. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He was promoted to major on September 6, 1862, to lieutenant colonel on July 23, 1863, and to colonel on February 18, 1864. He was wounded in the leg near Blackstone, Virginia, on June 23, 1864. Doctors amputated the leg, but he died later that day.
