Leprelate M. Bates
Leprelate M. Bates was born around 1842 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Reuben and Amy Bates. His father was a pattern maker who owned $5,000 of real estate and $500 of personal property by 1860. Bates grew up and attended school in Providence. He married Clara B. Risley on May 19, 1863.

He enlisted in the Union army on August 17, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company E of the 3rd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on August 27. The regiment took part in the siege of Petersburg. Bates received a promotion to 2nd lieutenant on January 15, 1865, and he mustered out on September 18, 1865.

Bates returned to Rhode Island after the war. His wife may have died by the early 1870s, and he married Cora F. Moulton on November 2, 1874. They had at least three children: Mabel, born around 1875; Ami, born around 1878; and Albert, born around 1879. The family moved to Northbridge, Massachusetts, in the late 1870s, and he worked as a pattern maker there. They returned to Providence in the early 1880s. He attended at least one regimental reunion in July 1887.

Bates applied for a federal pension in June 1902 and eventually secured one. He committed suicide in Boston on January 19, 1911.
