J. A. Palmer to Edward H. Myers, 1862
John W. Hodnett Son of Wm and Caroline Hodnett died in an old out house nere Middletown Verginia with Smoll Pox on the 24th of November 1862
He was a member of company R 13th Georgia Redgment He went into the rm army in July 1861 was with Gen Floyed in North Westen Va in the fall and winter of 1861 in the Spring of 1862 he hay was put under Gen Jackson and fought with that Hero through the Summer of & fall of 1862 without ever being hit by the inimy & by a Strange & misterious Providence was permited to contract that loathsom Dessese Smoll Pox & died in that old hous without being attended by any friend Save a brother who had the Same disease and a nurse He was a good Citizen a good Soldier & better still a Christian in evry letter to his friends he would Say Something about religion his brother in a letter States that he was happy while Sicke & would Sing of Glory thus lived & died one of the best men I ever knew
The voyage of life’s at an end
The mortal affliction is past
While heaven and earth combine to Say
How blest the righteous when he dies
