Couson knowing that you woud like to hear from us I seat my self this evening to inform you that we are all well at this time excep Jack Wise he had a chill last night there is seavral complaining with sour throat since I have ben writing I heard of the death of Daived B. Morgan, a member of our company who he was taken to the hospittle on fryday last and dide this morning with the scarlet feaver. the helth of the company is better than I think it has ever ben sence we left home. I am improveing twice as fast sence I have ben heir than I did while at home their was nothing said to us about staying over our time, we met Col. Douglas as we came out to camp and he told us that we ought to have staid longer so when I cam agan he will not have to tell me to stay. all that Cpt Captan Long had to say was that he woud introduce us us to a wheelbarow on the next day and so he did and I have ben well acquainted with…[paper frayed, one line lost]/it ever sence we have a greatdeal of work to do do yet; our regiment is engeaged at the batry and in blockadeing a cree to prevent yankeys from lan landing. we can see their gun boats from our batry at a distance of six or seaven miles off the recruits arrived heir last sunday and you ought to see them how they do work they look like they are trying to make up for all lost time. Bill looks like a lost sheep in the wildiness. I seen John more and the boys last sunday Sam was on dewety they was all well and wishing evry day for their time to be up and Jeams looked as fat as any a bair him and Dennis are verry good matches Mac Ward had ben sick but was on the mend. Hamby and Green was verry sick. tell all of the Girls houdy for me for I dident heve the cahance to tell them all houdy when I was their whitch I regreted verry much but I am inhops that the day will soon come that I may see them a gain Write me how Miss Lany is getting on with her school Write soon…[paper frayed] H H Hodnett
