                                        Near Dalton    Ga            April the 10/64
 
                                    Dear Susan I seat my self to drop you a fu lins I am well at presant I am in hops thes lins may come to hand in due time and find you and the children all well and all the Nabers and friends I have nothin to write tha will interest yo though I have nothing to do this evening. I thought mabey you wold like to red a fu lins from me the weather is a geting a good deal plesanter though we have a heap of rain yet the vegatation is be gining to spring up a rite smart and the trees and bushes leaven out veary fast
 
I have not heard of the yankes a advancing laitley I dont think thare is veary/near us hear though tha may soon come          Susan we are faring tolible well now we draw a plentey of meal and 1/3 of lbs of Bacon and some litle rise and Peas we got beter rashons ever since the first of Feberuary than we have in 13 or 14 months though we have drawn more than we do now though we can do tolible well on what we get now
Susan if you get this in time I want you to by Lees raser for me if it is sole if tha have it sole if it have not yet sloilt the one I want is one that has 2 or 3 blaids for one handle get BR examing them and see if tha be any a cont if tha are good I wold like to have/them if tha dont go too hie
 
susan you ought to have ben hear the other day to have see us a fiten we ware as brave as Liuns though we ware ften one other and no balls in our Guns and the Ofisers all cold see that fite for tha new thare was no danger in a poder gun it was rite pretey site to see so meny men a fiten a Sham fite

Mother I am in hops that thes lins may find you and familey all well tha leave me in veary good health and in tolible good sparits I think that this wicked ware will shurley end this year and then we pore Solgers can go to our homes/
 
I can hear every day or too that we will have to go to vargina though I am in hops not I dont want to go thare though if I nod our goin thare and fiten one hard fite wold end the ware I wold go wilingley and I wold want to stary soon for I want the time to come when what is left to get to go to theare homes if I dont get thare my self mabey thare will be some one that will good by Mother for this time  BR I am in hops that you are in good health and at home and will stay I think that I can do your fiten and mine too if that will keap you thare to make bread for Mother and Susan and take caer of the Stock for them I must close W A Stephens
