                                           Franklin Tenn Ar May the 10th 1863
 
                                    Kind friend                 I have been looking for a letter from you for some time but thinking that it might have been mis carried I thought that I would drop you A few lines for to let you know that I am still numbered with the living it is Sunday evening the weather is warm the season is farther advanced than it will be there by the 15th of June I have just got in from picket my health is good John is at Louisville Ky he went there with some others to get some new horses for the regiment they started the 20th of April they must have had good times since they left the regiment I expect him back at pretty soon we got six months pay since I last wrote to you when I last wrote to you I thought that we would have A fight here but it did not amount to much but it may not be all over yet they charged into the place but got so warm A recp reception that they som soon made tracks the other way they lost about 27 I believe General Granger has got the place strongly fortified so they will loose some of their butternut lives before they can get franklin we have had several skirmishes with them since we came here there is A report in camp today that Richmond has fallen I do no believe this but still I hope it is so if it is it is the best news of the season it would look like the beginning of the of this cursed rebelion the defeat of Admiral Dupont at Charleston was A severe blow to the hopes of the Nation but I hope the cloud will pass Away I trust the future will be/brighter than the past that the wicked rebellion will be wiped out I think there has been price enough payed for the union there is no one that ever thinks of giving up un untill the last man has been killed I want to see the old flag come off victorious and triumph over all its enemys What ever the price is let it be payed but no more of this I suppose Cove and Thame are having fine times up there and lige I expect he is enjoying him self up there I heard that he was going to enlist in the fusileir fusileers I seen Miron Creager this spring he looks tough as can be Marvin is here he is well Theadore Carslile was taken prisoner I shouldent wonder if he got home before long I seen George Wolverton last march he was well and Ian Hamilton and Joseph Tuttle he was not very well Henry Britton looked tough and so did Vineca Vanderhoof there is not much more me news for me to write
