Dear friend      I thought that I would write you A few lines to let you know that I am still in the land of the living and to give you some account of what I have been doing since I last wrote to you We left Carter Creek on 22d of August and went to franklin where we were mounted and equiped and on the night of the 30 we went to Nashville and the next night started in in pursuit of Wheelers forces then on the rail road between there and Murfreesboro and came up with him about twelve oclock that night and had a slight skirmish but there being no moonlight we had to wait until morning the fight comenced in the morning and lasted untill three/in the afternoon when the enemy retreated and we did not come up with them untill noon the next day the weather was so warm that some of the men were sunstruck on the field We routed them again killing thirty and or more of them with one brigadier Gl who was mortally wounded and left in our hands he died the next day then we had A fight with him at Cambpellville and drove him again which was the last chance we had at him we followed them to the Tennessee river in Alabama within six miles of Florence then we turned and came back to Franklin where we arived on the 7th of Sept mking in all 17 days ride never talking of the nights but this is enough of this so I will try something else day before yesterday I saw Chancy Parmerly he is in company E of this rejiment he is well Lt Creager has got back to the rejiment Thame has not here yet Chancy told me that he went to Chattinooga before he came here he/seen Sabin and George Scott and Miron C they were all well all he had to tell me was news to me for I have not had A letter since the 10th of last month when we came back there most half A bushel of mail for the company and I thought my chance was good for one letter but I was doomed to disapointment for my name was not called atall this makes three that I have written to you since I heard from you but I guess that I have scolded enough for one time so if you will overlook mistakes and bad composition and bad spelling and my want of patience with my best respects and well wishes to you and enquiring friends I will
