                                                                        Camp Bolles Va.
                                                                        Nov. 16th 1861
 
                                                                                    Dear Mother
                                                                                                I take my pen in hand to let you know that arrived safe and sound about eight oclock last night I got to ride as far as lowell and then walked the rest of the way I stopped in Marietta about 2 or 3 hours and bought some dime novels and some paper and envelops We expect to leave here next week we have got our haversacks and boots I have got a pair of boots so big in the instep that I can nearly kick them/off I do not know when any of the boys will be up we have to stay here till we are filled up and then we will be mustered in and get some money. The colonel has gone to Wheeling to get our arms we expect to go to charleston as soon as we get our arms well I believe that is all I have to say at present            farewell
