Amos F. Garrison II to Harriet F. Kirby, 5 January 1862
                                    Santa Fe New Mexico
                                                               January 5th 1862

       Dear Sister
Your welcome letter of 27th November
was received a month afterwards.    I was very glad to
hear that all is well.    I am getting fat and fatter every day
enjoying the best of health.    I have gained about 20 pounds since
I left home.    the weather this fall & winter so far has been very warm
so much so that it has been very unhealthy.    the small pox
has been raging pretty badly although they don’t think anything
of it here, I suppose there has not been more than five or six
hundred  that has had it--mostly children.    I have been close
too it all broken out several times, and have been in rooms
with persons sickening with it, don’t be frightened now,
as this happened more than a month ago, the town is nearly
clear of it.

This letter I am afraid will be a letter of frights
to you, but keep quiet and cool as I shall do well enough
there is a rumor that two thousand Texans are marching
on to this town where we only have two or three hundred
soldiers,(but who cares) the express this morning brought a
letter from the Colonel stating that the Texans were marching
in force upon Fort Craig where he now is, three days ago they
were within 35 miles, where they drove in his pickets.
Fort Craig is from 175 to 200 miles from here, by next letter
I am in hopes I can give you some good news.

We are getting along finely plenty to do and not
much time to do it in, waiting and wishing to be
ordered in to the field.

Give my regards to all friends. Kiss the
girls for me.    tell Lou and Con to write. tell Mrs Eliza
Jane I have been trying to write to her for some time
but have not succeeded.    I think if she would try she
could do better.    Excuse this scribble as it was all done
in five minutes by the watch.

                           From your ever loving brother
                                       Amos F.Garrison, Jr.

Mrs H.F.Kirby
     Salem, N.J.

P.S.   I am glad to hear that the young ladies think of me
when they see you, for that is about the only time.
                                                                  A.F.G.Jr.
