Dear Sister
Your very welcome letter was
received on the 6th and just one month after
written. Your first question is “I cannot imagine
why my letters are not answered” I can assure
you that your letters as well as everyone elses that
correspond with me are always answered, and
in every instance where it is at all possible by
the return mail, that is, those that I receive, but
in these uncertain times you must give a little
of blame to the mails. I consider myself just
as much bound to answer a letter as a question.
You remark that my Christmas presents
are mostly Photographs. I am sorry to say that
these as well as all other kinds are scarce. I have
not received anything in that shape since I left
home, not one.
In regard to my salary, heretofore it has
been $75 per month but now it is $100 which is
more than any Government Clerk in the Territory
gets, and this is by order of Comdg General at Washington
This looks like a pretty good sum, my board
lodging and washing alone amounts to $55.per
month and everything that you want is double or
triple what it is in the States, but not withstanding
I have about $300. clear money laid by to come home
with when I get ready, this is savings, extra work,
etc.
