Amos F. Garrison II to John Kirby, 23 February 1862
                                  Sante Fe N.M.
                                     February 23d, 1862

     Dear Brother
Your very welcome letter was received
on the 20th inst with great pleasure.

In regard to that money that Mr Stratton
has, I am perfectly willing for you to use in any way
that you wish.    use it and secure it as if were your own
and I will be satisfied, if I were in your placewith as
good a prospect of this war continuing, I would hold off
a while as property must go down, the interest on $5000.
Amounts to a pretty good rent, I would rather that the money would  advance
the interests of you, than most any one else, so make the
best use of it.

A great many of your papers have been received and
others sent in return and I am much obliged you for them.
I  think I shall have to settle down out here if I hear of many
more marriages taken place and what is to take place.    I am
glad to see it, George has had a hard time of it, but he worked
very hard in return and as it proved successively.

We have no very important news here, we have been
expecting a fight, below about 200 miles in the neighborhood of
Fort Craig for a week back but it has not amounted to much
except a little skirmishing, the Texans are out in force of
about 3000 men under command of General Silby an old
West Point officer, opposed to which we have 1500 Regular soldiers
and 3 or 4000 Mexican Volunteers and Militia men, these are
under Col. E.R.Stanley in my opinion one of the best officers in the
Army.    I had an offer which I was sad to decline as aide de camp
to the second in command Lt. Col.J L Donaldson a brave and efficient
officer who outwitted two or three times in the Mexican war.

In the last three days there has been two men killed
here in the most cold blooded assassin like manner, one of them
was killed in the presence of ten or twelve men.    he was setting at
a table playing at faro and was reaching over the table putting
a bet down when a man came up behind and struck
him twice with a heavy stick with both hands over the head.    the
murderer has escaped so far:  but a man being killed is a common
recurrence in this Territory they think noting of it.

My love to all.  kisses to Nell & Kate
                                   Very Respectfully & Sincerely Yours
Dr. John Kirby
