Amos F. Garrison II to Harriet F. Kirby, 16 March 1862
                                        Ft. Union N.M.
                                         March 16” 1862

     Dear Sister
                                  We have been compelled to
evacuate Sante Fe for a short time but I hope
to be back there soon     I was one of the last to leave
with the commander of the District and hope to be
one of the first to go back again,

We have been reinforced by 1000 Volunteers
from Colorado Territory    our army here is about 1400
men and we have about 1200 men at Fort Craig
150 to 200 miles from here.    The Texans about 2500 strong
are between the two armies so you can see things are
little critical, but we will come out all right in
the end.    We have got the courage and determination
these are bound to win.    we expect to go into the field
in about a week cheerfully and willingly.

     Everything is well
                                Your affectionate Brother
                                 Amos
