Amos F. Garrison II to Harriet F. Kirby, 4 May 1862
                           Sante Fe N.M. May 4” 1862
                                     10 o’clock A.M.

     Dear Sister
                        I commence writing this letter
rather against my inclinations.    As I have answered
every letter that has been received by me, and the
truth of it is I have not received any for four or
five weeks, and I had almost made up my mind
not to write until I did get one, but being a very
nice morning and not so much to do I could not help
writing a few lines.

We have got back in our old quarters once
more and find that we have not lost much by the
Texians.    fifty dollars will cover our losses. The Texian
have left the Territory.    their army was completely
disorganized.    as soon as they got below our forces
they separated and travelled in small parties
varying from ten to two hundred.    Major Jordan
their principal surgeon says they came into the
Territory from 2800 to 3000 strong effective men
and they go out with less than 1200.    They
deserted sick and wounded, wagons, buried or
destroyed their cannon.    The only train they were
seem to have 7 wagons for their whole command.
My hand is a little shakey this morning
owing to being up pretty late last night at a great
baile, where the senoritas were as thick as hops, and
not having seen anything of the kind for nearly three
months, I enjoyed it very much.

I think in a month or two I shall send
some money to you, and have some clothes made and
sent out. I shall need some, and everything here
is both very high in price and poor in quality. I can
get it brought out from Kansas City in a train for
eight or ten cents per pound.

Tell me what Henry and Gus are doing.
I would like to know how they are getting along, I
suppose Nell & Kate are growing fast.    is Kate as full
of mischief as ever.    I dont expect there is quite as
much noise about the house now as there used to
be, although I was noted for being very quiet
Write soon.    Give my love to all the folks in
general and some few in particular.    I suppose
Lou is to be married soon but she won’t tell
me anything about it.

                        Your
                                Affectionate Brother
