Amos F. Garrison II to Harriet F. Kirby, 22 June 1862
                             Sante Fe N.M.
                                       June 22” 1862

     Dear Sister
Yours of 26th all is received
The idea of a report that I was dead the Salem
people are not going to get clear of me that easy.
the Hotel keeper here dont think that I have gone
up yet, for he keeps my board up to $10. a week
I was sick a week or two back lost 18lbs in 10 days
but never stopped work.    this sick business, Quinine
powder twice a day dont agree with me.

I am uneasy about Henry.    I have received
two very discouraging letters from him.     in the last he
wanted to know the prospect out here for him.
for a single man it is good, but it is no place
for an American woman and I dont like to give
him encouragement enough for a separation.    I am
confident that I could get him a situation to pay
about $8 or $900.00 clear of board, but I dont like to
do it.    I will advance him $200   $300.00, pay me when
he pleases to live on or to get him a situation.    I
know I could get him one if I was home if things
work right.    I can command influence enough here
to get him a situation in the war or treasury
Department, Washington, but the men I want
to see are away and I am afraid they won’t be
back for a week or two.    if he concludes to come
out here I will advance funds to pay expenses,
and if I dont get him a situation to suit, I will
give him mine, and if I say it myself I can get
most any situation I want in the Territory.
(my situation will be providing the Captain is willing)
I wish you would write to him immediately about it
as I want to wait until next mail as I want to
see one of our best business men first.    I would like
to make every effort to get him a situation nearer
home if possible.    Henry is pretty high spirited so
write to him in a very kind tone and in a way
to raise his spirits.    if he would allow you to mention
it to Mr Archer I think he could give some assistance.
Is that $900. all that is due to me as my share
of yearly payments.    I wish Doctor would keep me
advised of all money matters in a clear and distinct
manner.    he knows every cent I have received, and
what I should receive.    The watek money give
to Nell and Kate or buy birth day presents for
them.

It will be too late this year to get clothes out
but next year I will send.    I am not coming
East until the war is over and I dont know then
if they dont keep those black Abolissionists still
in Congress. (that is if they free all the negros)

I forgot to bring my photographs of Nell
& Kate with me.    if you can get it taken on a card
so you can send it in a letter it would be very
acceptable.

     The Subsistance Department when we
came here was only provisioned for 2000 men daily
and ever since we have been here we have been feeding
from 5 to 6000 daily and during the invasion a greeat
many was destroyed, but while it is under the
Captain’s management they will never be short.
provisions is scarce in the Sothern Posts but
it is for want of transportation in the Territory.

Excuse scribbling.   Write soon    Kiss Nell
and Kate    My love to all
                            Yours as ever
                                         A.F.Garrison, Jr.
