Amos F. Garrison II to Harriet F. Kirby, 7 September 1862

                                    September 7th 1862

     Dear Sister
                        Your welcome letter of August
10th is received.    I am very sorry to hear that you
have been sick but I hope it was only from the heat
and I know that to you it is a very oppressive and weak-
ening.    poor little Kate  how I would like to see her and
Nellie too:    that money for the watch I mean for them
all of it.    buy something for them both to remember
me by, and give it to them as a present from me
and if there is any left it will due for Ice Cream & C
which we do not get in this country

The business letter you speak of that the
Doctor has unanswered is in regard to the money
I wrote for.    you must not think I need it too
live on for I do not, but the legal interest of the
Territory is .12 per cent, which is double what it is
in Jersey, and then I may have an opportunity to
use it to a better advantage, on the 11th of this month
at 12 o’clock it will be a year since I arrived in this
town, and I expect to have a $1000.00 savings since
my arrival and it was all earned by hard work.
there is times here as well as every where else that
a person can invest 2 or $3000.00 and make a
big profit out of it.    I am going to try to get into
some kind of business here for myself as profits
are very large, if a person manages right and I
begin to flatter myself that I can do it.

I have written to Henry once or
twice in answer to his and I have written to you
in regard to it.    I can not promise him a sure
thing at once as I have not the means or influence.
I will promise one thing that he shall not loose
anything if he comes.    he shall at least go home as
well  off as he comes.   I cannot retain a situation
for him for a month or two, although I think I
could get him one without any trouble upon his
arrival here.    I would much rather he would get
some situation at home though, as he will find
things very difficult in this countryfrom what he
has been used to.    if I was to write and tell him to
come and anything was to happen to him I should
get all the blame.  it is not too late if he wishes to come

I some times wish that I was on the
Potomac.    if I thought the war would last two
years longer I would go there too, as I think
I have influence enough to get me either a commission
or something that would suit me as well.

I am very happy to learn that some
of my lady friends still think of me once and a
while.    I am in hopes that I shall see them all
again some of these days.    I hope Miss Lizzie G-
is well.

The great difficulty in getting employment
that you speak of for John Craven & Will Thomp-
son is here.    that want employment as gentlemen
not to work.    If I had nothing to do here and
could not do better, I should feel contented astride
of a mule driving government 10 mule wagons.
Give my love to all the folks.    tell John to
save out of the money he collects what he thinks is
right.    the other can be sent by U.S.Draft or through
the firm of Spiegelberg Bros. who have a large establish-
ment here and one in New York.    Uncle George can
tell them.

                 All well, Write soon
                             Your Brother
