Amos F. Garrison II to John Kirby, 31 May 1864
                               Survey of Sonora
                               Office of Chief of Commision
                               Hermosillo May31st 1864

Dr. John Kirby
Salem N.J.
                                    Dear Brother
Yours
of 1st instance rec’d in which you say
“enclosed I send you Henry’s plea for not
being able to pay you that money at
present” and as there was no enclosure
I suppose that you mean that there is no plea
I do not wish to injure him in his bus-
iness but I need the money, and  interest
is much cheaper there, than here, and as
soon as he can conviently make the arran
gements, to forward to me , I would like him
to do it, but if he asks for a month or two
time and you think well of it, let him
have it.

In regards to the draft, I do not
know whether it arrived or no as I have
heard nothing from the agt. of Wells Fargo & Co
who is in Geramas.    I will let you know
by next steamer the results as I have
written the agent.

I am very sorry to hear that my old friend
Mr Archer is confined to his house.    I would
like to see him and have a good sociable
talk with him.    he is not the only one that
has grown fleshy.    I myself weigh upward
of 180 lbs.    He is one of the finest gentleman
I have ever seen and it is a pity that
he should be deprived of travelling as
he likes it so much.    please give him my
very kindest regards and say to him that
the pleasantest memories that I have of
Jersey are connected with him and our
rides:    also remember me to Frank Acton
and tell him to write to me and give
me the news.

I am in hopes that Gus &
John Batten will do well in their new
enterprise, they will. I think if they
attend to it closely.

                  In regard to forward-
ing the money in drafts for gold or
greenbacks on San Francisco either of them
are A.1. here.

                   Times are still very dull
here, but are looking up and I think
that this year will bring quite a change
at least I hope so for on this I have
formed the idea of going home in’76

What do you think.    while I am
writing a man has just made me a
proposition of one half of a ranch which
contains 22000 acres of land mostly grazing
a small portion agricultural with a min-
ing stream of water, house incl for the in-
significant sum of 200$ with a change
here can money be made or not.

                    Good Bye    love & kind
regards to every body, likewise the Major
wishes to be remembered.    he is very well
active and strong.    kisses for the big babies
how is Harriet.    I suppose she has my bed
quilt and Bears well kept.

                     Write Soon and Oblige
                                Your Brother
