Fort Craig N.M. Oct 30” 1864
Dear Sister:
Yours of Sept. 3rd was received
two weeks ago in LasLeunces. I have been and
will be for the next three months knocking around
all over the country. you can address the letters as
usual at this place and they will forward until
further notice. You can imagine me about next
Christmas riding one mule and leading another
packed with my traps on the desert close to Fort
Yuma on my way to California. I am in Cala”
State bounty business this winter. they are suppos-
ed to be paid off in gold at the rate of 5” per
month per man. I want to return through
Old Mexico if I can, as I think some of these
days there is going to be a good chance to make
money there, and I wish to prospect in advance
if there was a war with France I shall certainly
be somewhere in the midst of it, especially
at some of the ports of entry.
Three days ago the Indians came into Parajae
a small town seven miles from here and drove
off all of their stock, shot one boy and took anoth
-er prisoner. All of the little towns down the river
have been served the same way, and they have
even come into the towns and carried off corn
killing every body that came in their way.
If I come back to this country merchan-
dizing I shall probably come home as I
shall have to go to the States to purchase
goods, this is not certain.
How is election.
pretty exciting I expect. Old Abe I find
Henry says is sure to be elected, but George
B. McClellan will give him a pretty tight
run. I should think by the appearances of
things, he has very good backers-
Write soon love to all
Yours as ever

P.S. There is a private
soldier in Cala Vols
here who used to clerk
for J.W.Cattrell by the
name of B.F.Parsons
he knows all the Salem folks
