Amos F. Garrison II to John Kirby, 19 July 1865
                         Calabassas A.G. July 19th 1865

Dear Brother:
You see I am travelling around
considerable of late, but I am settled at last
in a home if two pairs of blankets consti-
tute a home, it is a splendid country and
climate, but USam, has not had time to
build Posts sufficient in it as yet.    the
Indians are very bad all over the country
so much so that they have nealy depopu
-lated it two or three times of white men
but the cry is still they come, as the
soil and mines are very rich.    in the six
weeks I have been here they have killed
15 men, women & and children and took three
children prisoners within a circuit of from
4 to 25 miles.  it is necessary to either
travel with an escort or run your luck
which is what I have been doing day & night
and very sucessfully so far.

                              If the future
continues as bright as it looks as if it might
be for two or three years, I shall be ready
to come home to stay.

                Excuse haste, write soon, this
place is within 8 miles of the border of old
Mexico which I travelled through for a
month in May.

                 Good Bye God Bless you
Regards to all
                   Your Brother
                           A.F. Garrison
