Fort Mason May” 1866
Dear Brother:
It has been a long while
since I wrote you but I have been
very busy so far this year. Feby 4”
I left here and took my partner to
Guayamas on his way to San Loan Co
after goods. got back on 24th same
month. on 16” of March again went to
Sonora with four men after cattle
for Govt.(horseback) got back last
day in the month. in the fifteen
days rode little over 500 miles bought
my cattle from six ranches exchang
ed my G.B. for coin, and laid over
four days, didn’t do anything, which
was an average of 45 miles a day. the
last two & 1/2 days rode 165 miles this
is pretty good travelling with same
horse - but this life I am pretty
well used to now-
The Indians have killed three and
wounded four men besides steal
ing considerable stock within the
last week within a circuit of
12 miles of here. I have to keep a
sharp lookout for self and stock as
I am quite a ranchero now. I have
a farm or ranch on 4 1/2 miles of Past
with fifty head of cattle, cows, calves &
ten head horses, mules & colts,
thirty or forty hogs, chickens, quails
etc. as soon as my partner returns
I shall either buy or sell our store
if I sell I shall come home and
buy stock of goods in New York. I
am fat and saucy as ever. weigh 160
lbs without coat or vest which is
pretty good for one who has had
the fever & ague sixteen times in eight
months.
Love to all
Yours Truly
