Amos F. Garrison I to Harriet F. Kirby, 28 July 1866
                                 Office Deene Farm Petro Co
                                             July 28th 1866

Dearest Niece.
                              Your welcome & kind letter
was just received.    I know but little of interest
in this weird country to communicate,
and have been very much
occupied of late.    My duties are arduous.
We have yet no chance of striking
oil and company are getting discour
aged.    they have been sinking wells
some 6 in number for over a year and
have spent vast sums of money and no
results.    I think they will wind up soon.
then I shall be foot loose again,
and probally pay you a visit as I
see nothing here that would pay
to take hold of- I shall make a
appropriate effort if I come east to get
into some business in that section
of country near my relatives.

You say my Nephew Amos talks
of coming East soon.    If he should
tell him to write to me at once
and I will come on and see him
If he continues in that country
and thinks I can do well in
Arizona I will go out with him
at once.    I want to get settled in
business somewhere - do not fail
to let me know if he comes home
He is my favorite connection and I
flatter myself he is attached to me.
I am alone in this wide world
and it is necessary to have some
one to sympethise with you.
I hope you and the Doctor and
the young ladies are all well, and
that the Doctor is prospering in his
business - and happy and contented.

I learned that Anna, Georges wife,
is in a poor way & not long for this world.
It is a sad time for brother George.
Have you seen the baby yet and how
is she - I have received no letters
from that bunch of my relatives,
Except from Hedge.    Give my best and
kindest regards to George, wife and
daughter & Capt Shwin, and remember
me particularly to Hedge and Addie
they have been very kind to me and
I love them very much - Kiss little May for
me, and give to each of your daugh
ters one long and fervent kiss for me
and hope to see them before very long.

They are striking oil at the Burning
Spring weekly 20 miles from here further
up in the mountains, and the wells
are flowing several thousand barrels
per day .-    There I have written you
a long and uninteresting letter really
having nothing to communicate - write
to me frequently.    It cheers me in my solitude.
                                        Your affecionate
                                           Uncle
                                                   A.F.Garrison
