Guaymas Office Jany 26th, 1868
My Dear Sister
It appears from a letter
John wrote to Comdg. Officer Fort Mason
that my letters have miscarried, for I
have written once every month or two
months to some member of the family
particularly Uncle Amos, who I
have written to every month if there
was any mail from where I was,
but I have been principally on
the go, travelling - but as a rolling
stone gethers no moss, I have purchas
ed property to a considerable amount
in Hemosillo Sonora Mexico 100 miles
from this post in a direct line to
the U.S. and am sole propietor
of a first class hotel in that place,
the only one in the State and dont
owe a cent, like wise a line of stages
from this place, I still live and keep
ahead of a living, I have done this
after mature deliberation, well satisfied
in my own mind that, I can never live
East, tied up by fashions and new
fangled notion, until I am able
to bid defiance to the public in general
the only inducement to bring me home
at present is to see you all and I
would like to pick myself a nice
intelligent young wife, who I can
well takecare of, to make money I
know how to save is much harder
and I think with some one to help
me it would be much easier. I have
written to Uncle Amos to come out
immediately. I would ask him to
bring me one out but I am afraid
they would object to such courtship.
I feel the necessity of one very much
and I dont want to marry a
Mexican woman for if I did I should
never come East to live certain
Love to all. Good bye, write
often. My address as over leaf via
San Francisco, or by Wells Fago & Co
Express. Adios
Your Brother
