Dr. John Kirby
Salem N.J.
Dear Brother
In your
letter of Feby 17th you say that Henry is
angry every time the debt is mentioned
if so, he certainly is in fault for I have
given him no reason: it seems to be in
the blood of our race that instead of trying
to help each other, we should all pull
different ways and if it was not for the
extreme necessity, that I have for the
money , I should tell him to keep it. he
does not even acknowledge me or my
letters, but as it is, and if the debt is
not outlawed , advise him first of my
resolution to collect the amount due me
and then as a last resort collect if possible
by every process that the law allows - but
I should always prefer to regulate the dif-
ference in a brotherly way, so that if I
ever do come home, that I may be receiv-
ed as I should like to me.
If you do collect
the amount and to not give double trouble
see if you can send all together, Cumber-
land property and all, even if you have
to discount the latter, I have written
to Henry, Gus & Co and am still in hopes
that he will settle the act without
farther trouble, which I should be sorry
to give you as well as the shame, for
all of us, but if you do have to start a
suit spare no expense, even if it takes
all of it to carry it through on the Davey
Crockett rule. be sure you are right , then
go ahead, even to the last cent, as I am
heartily tired, as well as surprised at
the action Henry has taken. I suppose
the previous power of attorney is all that
is necessary.
Tell Nell I have received
her letter and return her many
thanks for same, and that I am very
glad that they are enjoying themselves
at the sociables & c and I am still in
hopes to have the honor of accompany-
ing them upon some future occasion
to not forget to remember me to Mr
Archer, of all my old friends, he is
the first and I should like to see
him very much.
Now with love
and kind remberances to each
and every one of you. I am as ever
Your afcnte brother

P.S.
Uncle Amos is well and sends
regards. Tell Harriet that I only
weigh 182 pounds and can still
put my leg behind my head on
my neck and hope to see her before
the 15 years are completed -
