[Letterhead: Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi,
Office Provost Marshal General,]
[Nashville, Tenn.,] Septr 23d [1864.]
Dear John.—
You know not how much I regret that your plan to come here, is frustrated & I am cheated out of the great pleasure of seing you,—however, since it cannot be helped it must be endured. There is so little attraction in this place, that I cannot urge any one to come on a visit,—it would afford me heart pleasure to send you a Pass whenever you want it. I return enclosed, Mrs Cole’s letter & for her sake am glad the journey has been saved her and by Tommy’s arrival at home, her anxiety is allayed.—Again have/we a subject for gratitute to God for the success given to our forces in the Shenandoah Valley. A like result in the coming engagement betwee the Potomac army & Lee’s Rebel crew and we may hope for a speedy peace.
I know of nothing of any importance to impart to you this time & close with the hope, we may soon see each other.—
Affectionately
Your brother
Edward.
Much love to sister Lona.—
I am much better in health.—
My letter of last Monday has undoubtedly reached you by this time.
