Edward Gilbert to John Gilbert, 28 June 1864
                                                            [Letterhead:    Post Quartermasters Office,
                                                                                                Nashville, Tenn.,]
                                                                                                June 28th [1864.]

My dear brother.—
Being now a dead certainty that I am going on duty with Capt. Stockdale, I will inform you of it; the official documents are made out & I am duly transferred from the Qr Mr. Dept to Head Quarters Military Division of the Mississippi “by order of Maj. Gen. W. T. Sherman”.—

Through courtesy to Isom I am yet working for him, as he has not one among his $1500 a month clerks, who feel themselves capable of taking my desk (a positive fact), and I do not want to leave him in a lurch, ‘though I could any hour I wanted to. Stockdale consented to my staying for a few days, until Isom can find somebody,—I shall make it convenient to quit on the 1st proximo.—This is now the third time, that Stockdale has befriended me to good effect;—the Adjt. Genl. at his Hd. Qs. wanted him to take one of his clerks, but Stockdale would not consent to it & had me detailed.—I am now/that much better off, that I get once more extra pay (40c.) & commutation of rations at 75cts, making $1.10 pr day. Furthermore I believe I am or shall be with a man, whose shoulder straps have left the man in his heart yet.—

I had a very pleasing letter from Cousin George last Sunday;—the first I got from him. It is the opening of a new Era in life.—

Sarah is safely housed in her father’s home & very happy; her parents were exceeding delighted to see them & fairly go beside themselves with joy at the children. They were alone & being old, felt the want of children’s glee about them.—I leave my babies to supply that. Charley has all his own way now & will fare with grandmother, as we used to, from grandmother S.—I am glad indeed they are there.—I am in fair health and hope soon to be in good cheer. I have been much calmer of late & abide events with patience.—

With much love to Lona, I am as ever
                                                Yours &c
                                                            Edward.—
