Edward Gilbert to John Gilbert, 15 October 1862
                                                                                                Louisville, Ky, Octr 15/62

Dear John/
Yours of the 13th, is handed to me by W. Goucher this afternoon & I write now, to have you wait for my letter to mother.

I was taken quite sick yesterday & am but just able to sit up to day;—I have good care & nursing & will be all right in a day or two; (keep it from Sarah). I am dissapointed in not hearing from Sarah herself;—I expected Goucher would bring me a letter from her, but he had none.—Oh—Treadwell came from the Regimt last Friday,—he tells me on enquiry, that Hatch is most generally in the rear, unable to keep up in marching, but is otherwise, all right.—The 75th Regt, which is in the same Brigade with ours, is badly cut up,—having it reported, that they lost 450 in Killed & wounded;—the truth of this I can not vouch for; the 74th was drawn up in line of battle, but did not get in any real fight. 750 wounded were brought in the city last night; 8 from our regiment and either among the wounded or sick; I sent down to ascertain, but the messenger was not allowed to go in the Hospital. I hope to know all about it, to morrow./

I wish Sarah would get rid of that creature & I’ll try my hand at it in my next letter to her.—I am exceeding glad you done so well last month;—I hope, when dull times come on you again, you will bear them with patience.—I had a letter from Uncle Augustus last Saturday Sunday, which I answered at once.—I wish, you would send me a Dollars worth of Postage Stamps. I am most out & have but little to spare to buy them with. attend to it at once, please.—I have no great use of money, but want a little change. I loaned Nieman $50 in Rockford & he promised to pay me back in Chicago, but he got disappointed & I have to wait, until he gets paid off; it is safe enough, but discomotes me for the time being.

I shall write to morrow or next day.
                                    Your brother
                                                Edward

My love to Lona.—

I send my watch & a letter to Sarah, enclosed in a little box by Lorenzo Hill, who left here yesterday for Rockford; I presume, you have it before this reaches you.
