Edward Gilbert to John Gilbert, 18 April 1863
                                                                                                                        April 18th/63

Dear John/
The only objection now apparent, that the Q.M. can bring up, is that Remington signed for Williams time; but as a dead man can not be got to write, the Q.M. must be satisfied with the Col.s certificate on the bottom of the descriptive list.—I can not remember the number of hours & days on which I drew extra hours pay; you can take it right from the vouchers;—you will see, that each month is separate by itself;—please use care in filling the amount in correctly, so that all four will agree in amount, with that stated on the voucher.—I am perfectly willing to pay for all expenses occured in collecting it & if you can run in & push it through, I would like it very much.—Leave the space on top “for___ Quartermaster”, as it is. The extra hours as stated in the voucher, insert as “days” under “Term of service”;—if I mistake not, the days are all calculated on the voucher, if not call the day “8 hours” & dividing for the number of hours of each month, whether I wrote regimental/clerk or Clerk in Q.M. Department & hence leave the space “in what capacity employed” open to be filled with the same term as used there.—I have filled but one, so that it may as much as possible be in one hand writing; the certificates for Septr, Octr & Novr are to read the same,—with the change of month, days & amount.—I feel conscious, John, that I am giving you a great deal of trouble in this thing, but for my family’s sake you will do it cheerfully.

The form is used here but very little & I knew neither the kind nor how many it needed; I came very near blundering again, but for timely enquiries.—

Woodruff, I learn, is better this morning; it will take many days to get him well again.—

My leg took an other turn & if keeps on so much longer, I am going to apply for a discharge,—however, I hope, it will get well soon,—I thought it all O.K. day before yesterday.—
                        My love to Lona.
                                                Your afft. brother
                                                                        Edward
