John Gilbert to Philona Mandeville, 12 September 1872
                                                                                    Ft. Wayne, Sept. 12th 1872
                                                                                                                        9 1/2 P.M.

My darling wife—

Can hardly wait till Saturday to hear from you but suppose must content myself and talk to you, ere I lay me down to sleep.

Well, our house is truly very near its completion, the painters will be through to morrow, fence & every thing. That woman commenced to clean up this morning, she will finish to morrow, perhaps.

We have a real nice fence, an honor to the Gilbert mansion, may its owners prove equally an ornament to that highly aristocratic neighborhood.

Last night it rained very hard all night and to day has been pleasant and cool, to night it is blowing cold, I hope you had a pleasant time and good weather for the Fair.

Mrs Borden has another of her severe head aches, during her absence she was  not attacked at all, but as soon as she returns, they commence again Mrs Bond & boy have arrived & she makes herself at home at once. Poor Mrs. Sturgis has to go to Huntertown in the morning, her Lewis has another attack of Delirium-Tremen; he has sold out his Drug-store for $400 Dlls, and owes about 2400 Dlls. Mrs. Charley is in all her glory again, flirting all around, poor butterfly, let her enjoy her few months on this earth, and then?/

After prayer-meeting, which was real good, (16 persons present) your husband, Mr & Mrs Kimball & Fairbank were chosen Delegates to go to Angala on the 24th inst. to attend the 1/2 yearly convention, I should like to attend if I can get away.

But you may start on that day and that of course would be a happy disappointment if I could not go, don’t let that interfere with your coming. I have a very nice India Rubber Door Mat for the house, bought it with other Rubber Goods for the store & got it at wholesale price, namely $225, it retails at $400.

Carnahans have hired Munson’s new house. Mrs. Ed Williams is quite sick with something Ed. goes home quite frequently home during the day. I don’t have any thing to tell about, give ever so much love to all at home, and with many kisses to my best beloved, I bid her, [German, in German script].
                                                            Yours  John

Sept. 13th
A beautiful morning & rather cold.

Do you intend to visit your cousins in Chicago? I wish you could plan so that you would not arrive here at midnight, suppose you stop with them for one day, checking your trunk right through; by first buying your ticket at the Pittsburg depot & coming here when you are ready. you have to do this, in order to have it checked.

There is nothing more to add, so with my love          I am
Your                John
