Horace Garrigus to Isaac Garrigus, 17 September 1863
Portsmouth Sept 17th 63
Father
I take this opertunity to let you know how I am nothing [?] our company is [?]/
2 trasssured 23 on duty and the rest is on detached duty &c we have been in 8 battles we have had 16 killed and wounded we have had 19 comscrops sent to us a few days ago they are not good for much there is one thing I am proud of that is the 8th Con Volls was never whiped our motto is Never give up we have taken the field where others run I do not want to brag of the 8th the papers do not say much for us so we have to say something for our selves. you can see 7 of the battles we have been in and the/other is the Siege of Suffolk there you could not show your head above the rifle pits without being shot at by the reb sharp shooters.
but for all that we have seen some good times what I we call good times is when we can set down at night and engou ourself eating salt pork and hard tack and be assured that we would not have to fight to morrow.
We are having pleanty of duty to do now looking after those conscrips I am on guard very other day and night
Henry is in New Haven/in charge of the conscrips he has been to Waterbury three or four times he was well when last I heared from him. it is so late that I will Close
