Dear Brother
It was with much pleasure that I recieved your letter of the 18th it came to hand last night. It is a very rainy day so I do not have to work. I have had a very buisey time of it since I came here on duty evry day early and late Sundays not excepted it is as buisey time as the old 8th ever saw. I am feeling better today than I have for some time but this hard work will not last always and when it is done I think I shall feel better Wm H Cables is Corp and act Orderly Sargent of the Co if you was here it would/be so nice but never mind we can get along Ben Page was wounded in the battle of Sept 29 it was a bad wound in the privates Fred Coon was wounded the same day by three balls one in the arm one in the leg one in the side they ware bad but not dangerous S. L. Williams was wounded in the face but not bad F Eadens wounded in the leg not bad S F Plumb killed beside some recruits that I did not know the old 8th has lost over 400 men since May 1st/64 which is about 100 more than than we had at that date. In the last fight (Chaffins Farms) the 8th with there brigade made a charge over a flat of more than a mile on a fort and took it/as they are sure to do you know [Of course we did. that’s what’s the matter. But I limbered to Rear Double Quick—Cabe]
Cabe has been at work at this since I left it but it will not do to throw it away now Lieut Col M B Smith was wounded in the same engagement in the calf of the leg not bad.
G T Keeler is here he is act C.S. of the regt is doing well. Capt Sheffield is in comand of the Co Capt Goodrich in comand of the regt then there is Lieut Vorrow of Co K Lieut Pellem was a Sargent of Co H. and Lieut Meriam act Q. M. this is all the officers there is left with the regt at presant Col E. J. Ward is on detail at headquarters I do not know/how long he will stay there but I hope not long.
E.W. Basset is Cook for the Gen. We have now 81 men for duty in the regt.
The boys are all quite well G. L. Plat is here and RJ Plat also. When you came on with G. L. Plat you stoped to City Point did you not if so I was in that squad that was at the Provose Martials offace as he came there when I was there. but I will close for the presant from your
